A pediatrician is a medical practitioner specializing in children and their diseases.Pediatrics / paediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents.Pediatric physicians must have general medical knowledge and an understanding of how treatments affect different developmental growth stages.
Duties / Responsibilities
General pediatrician treats all types of infectious childhood diseases and injuries.Pediatrician must track and administer immunizations on schedule. They immunize kids against disease such as hepatitis B,Diptheria,mumps polio etc.
The doctor must be able to communicate well with both children and parents.
They usually educate parents/guardians on childhood eating habits,Promoting regular exercise and personal hygiene.
Education and Training
As with other types of physicians, pediatricians are required to earn a doctoral degree, such as a Doctor of Medicine.Once the doctoral degree is completed and you’ve decided to pursue a career as a pediatrician, you enter a pediatrics residency program, which lasts three years.
At Nairobi university the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health was established in 1967 at the inception of the Medical School.

At Kenyatta University The department was established in April 2004, at inception of the School of Health Sciences.It became operational in the year 2009. Currently, the department offers the course of Paediatrics and Child Health to students admitted for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, during their 4th year of study.
